Product Development/MTO Technician/Cutter

Plantation Patterns, a division of NBGHome, is a manufacturer and distributor of high quality outdoor cushions and umbrellas in the United States. We are currently seeking a Product Development/MTO Technician to be based in our Birmingham, AL facility.



This role is responsible for executing the MTO (Made to Order) production orders and is fully trained on all machine operations while also supporting the Division’s sample order process including performing routine and simple sewing tasks.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following with other duties as assigned:

    • Operates cutting machine to cut single layers of fabric into parts for cushions; adjusts cutting techniques to types of fabrics; marks fabrics with identifying information using appropriate method; starts machines, monitors operations and adjusts as needed; notifies supervisor of mechanical malfunctions.
    • Executes the MTO order process including processing of orders and materials coordination as required.
    • Inspects products to ensure that specifications are met and to determine whether machines require adjustment; reads work orders to determine which fabrics to be cut; confers with coworkers to obtain information about orders, processes, or problems
    • Assists in actively cutting, sewing, stuffing, and finishing samples as needed to support order requirements.
    • Keeps work areas clean and organized at all times, including patterns, fabrics, and sample fiber
    • Performs routine machine maintenance as needed, including cleaning, notifies supervisor of any necessary repairs or worn or defective parts.
    • Other Duties as Assigned.


  • Experience with automated textile cutting equipment platforms such as Lectra or Gerber including operation and programming.
  • Knowledge and experience with sewing technique and pattern interpretation is required, including trim and accessory application is desired.
  • This role is expected to be team-oriented and versatile in time management with a focus on safety and accuracy.
  • A beginner to intermediate skillset in Microsoft Office products is required including Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Familiarity with enterprise data management platforms such as SAP, FileMaker databases and project management software is desired.


Required education:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.

Required experience:

  • At least  one (1) to two (2) years fabric cutting experience required.

  • Manufacturing, production and operations experience preferable. 

  • Exceptional hand-eye coordination is essential. 

  • Experience using industrial cutting & sewing equipment.

  • Good written and verbal communication skills.

  • Basic math skills and understanding of three-dimensional space textile characteristics required.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to handle or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; occasionally sit or climb stairs; and frequently balance; stoop, bend and/or kneel.
